ICECO APL20 Review — The Best Overlanding Fridge for Weekend Warriors
The ICECO APL20 stands out because it gives you real compressor-fridge performance without the usual weight penalty
Quick Take
- Just 22.9 lb, which is why it stands out immediately for overlanding and weekend camping.
- A much easier fridge to lift, pack, and move around than heavier Dometic options.

ICECO is not the biggest name in overlanding fridges, but the APL20 hits a sweet spot that a lot of weekend warriors will appreciate immediately. This is a compact 21-quart aluminum fridge freezer that weighs just 22.9 pounds, and that number is the whole story.
A lot of overlanding fridges sound great until you actually have to lift them. That is where the APL20 makes its case. For short trips, solo setups, and smaller rigs, a lighter fridge is not just a nice bonus. It is often the difference between gear that feels easy to use and gear that feels like a chore.
That is also why the APL20 stands out against bulkier Dometic models. The Dometic CFX3 35, for example, is an excellent fridge, but it weighs 37 pounds. That is a big jump from 22.9 pounds. If you are just heading out for a weekend and do not need a much larger fridge, carrying around that extra weight does not always make sense.
The APL20 looks like the smarter pick for the typical weekend warrior. You still get real compressor-fridge performance, a -4°F to 68°F cooling range, low noise at 32 dB or less, and a Secop compressor with a 5-year warranty. ICECO also claims very low power use at 0.293 kWh per 24 hours, which matters if you are trying to stretch battery capacity over a couple of days.
The other thing working in its favor is size. A 20-liter fridge is not trying to be your full-time expedition kitchen. That is the point. It is easier to fit in smaller SUVs, easier to move around camp, and easier to justify for people who are doing two- or three-day trips instead of living out of a vehicle for weeks.
That does mean there is a tradeoff. If you need more food capacity, the APL20 is probably not enough. Bigger Dometic fridges earn their weight by carrying more and by fitting longer trips better. But for a lot of people, especially anyone building a lighter weekend setup, that extra size is overkill.
At $559, the APL20 is not cheap. But if your priority is getting the lightest serious overlanding fridge you can buy, this is exactly the kind of product worth looking at. For weekend warriors, that lower weight may matter more than almost anything else.
